Abstract
A multicenter study of skin sensitization to methylchloroisothiazolinone/methylisothiazolinone (MCI/ MI) was conducted by the North American Contact Dermatitis Group (NACDG) from August 1988 to September 1989. A total of 949 patch test clinic patients were patch tested with 100 ppm MCI/MI. Eighteen had positive reactions (1.9%). Further patch testing was done with dilutions of MCI/MI. Of 10 subjects who initially had positive patch tests, eight were positive with 100 ppm, three of whom were positive with 50 ppm and two of whom were positive with 25 ppm MCI/MI. Double-blind provocative-use tests showed that five (50%) patients who initially had positive patch tests to 100 ppm MCI/MI reacted to a generic skin care lotion preserved with 15 ppm MCI/MI. The prevalence of positive patch test reactions to MCI/MI was comparable with the prevalence rates for other standard allergens used in this study.
