Abstract
Methylisothiazolinones (MIT)-based preservatives are frequent sensitizers when used at concentrations below 30 ppm in cosmetics, toiletries, paints, cutting fluids, and in water-based systems for various industrial processes. Under use conditions, these products do not seem to be skin irritants because of their MIT content; however, exposure to MIT at higher concen- trations may be corrosive. In this study, chemical burns caused by accidental, occupational exposure to Kathon WT (MIT at 13.9%) in two workers are reported. In both workers, allergic contact dermatitis due to MIT added to the chemical burn.
