Individuals with disabilities are at elevated risk for engaging in non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI). As the prevalence of NSSI increases, it is likely that in their professional tenure, certified rehabilitation counselors (CRCs) will interact with clients who have engaged in NSSI. The purpose of this study was to examine factors associated with CRCs’ self-efficacy for working with clients engaging in NSSI. CRCs practicing in the United States were recruited to participate in an online survey study (N = 91). Hierarchical regression analysis was used to analyze factors associated with CRCs’ self-efficacy to work with clients with NSSI. Results indicated that training (β = .31) and stigma (helping attitude; β =.39) were significant predictors of CRCs’ self-efficacy for working with clients experiencing NSSI, with the total model explaining 33% of the variance in self-efficacy. CRCs who received NSSI training in the past reported more positive attitudes and perceived themselves as more capable to work with clients who engaged in NSSI. This study is among the few to examine specific factors impacting CRCs’ self-efficacy in working with NSSI. Implications for practice and research will be discussed.

The purpose of this article is to facilitate awareness in the rehabilitation counseling profession about the U.S. state of California’s AB 734, the Youth Tackle Football Bill. AB 734 proposed to ban tackle football participation for children less than 12 years of age. Beyond AB 734, this article addresses the profession’s ethical responsibilities to address football-related brain trauma. A review of journal articles, government documents, and websites was completed to conduct a legislative analysis through a narrative synthesis of the current status and ethical implications of AB 734. This article summarizes the state of play on AB 734 aligned to Bolman and Deal’s (2003) symbolic, human resource, structural, and political frames. Steps for needed ethical action by rehabilitation counselors are presented for each frame. The authors call for rehabilitation counselors to advocate for the interests of children playing the United States’ favorite sport, tackle football. Rehabilitation counselors possess training and expertise on the nexus between brain trauma and activities of daily living. Rehabilitation counselors face an ethical responsibility to utilize their expertise to protect the future health and well-being of youth tackle football participants.

Pew Research Institute estimated that, in 2020, ~70% of individuals in the United States identified as religious, and that United States military veterans identify in similar percentages. As such, the use of religion as a resource in the context of stress—a term called religious coping—has been studied systematically. Two types of religious coping have been identified: Positive Religious Coping (PRC) and Negative Religious Coping (NRC). Research shows that these different, but related constructs are uniquely related to health outcomes. In this study, PRC and NRC were examined through a psychometric lens as distinct mechanisms. A psychometric analysis of the two-factor Brief Religious Coping (RCOPE) Scale was conducted to examine the suitability of the measure in a a sample of military veterans (N = 170). Results indicated that two distinctbut-adapted subscales emerged. For the NRC Scale, six of the seven original items emerged as appropriate; for the PRC Scale, all seven of the original items were appropriate. Implications include the emerging evidence that the 13-item Brief RCOPE is functional for this population. The findings allow for assessment of religious coping in rehabilitation settings, given the established connections to health.
