Fear of falling avoidance behavior (FFAB) is a significant concern with a unique presentation among individuals with Parkinson’s disease. Researchers will review a classical Delphi study that formally validated the Screening of Cancer Survivorship-Occupational Therapy Services (SOCS-OTS). The tool was developed for oncology team members to identify those who need OT services because of occupational performance limitations. The SOCS-OTS is the first screening tool for oncology teams to address the broad spectrum of occupational performance issues at various points in the survivorship continuum.

In development of a population-level smartphone app that analyzes the motor skills of first-year infants, an pilot funded by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development indicates the need for an abridged assessment of motor items from currently available tools. The poster describes the development of a regressor and the first view of subjects assessed using the full 58-item AIMS versus the regressor’s salient set. Use as a screening tool during parent-led floor play could have a significant impact on early identification and the early identification pipeline.

The purpose of the study was to develop and determine reliability and validity of the Sensory Health Awareness and Responsiveness Profile (SHARP), a tool measuring sensory health awareness and responsiveness in adults. Seventy-seven students ages 18 to 42 participated in the study. Content validity was confirmed by a panel of experts. Internal reliability was strong. Construct validity was determined by comparisons with measures of interoceptive awareness and wellness (Multidimensional Assessment of Interoceptive Awareness).

Stroke recovery, with its foundations in neuroplasticity, is affected by sleep. It is important for OT practitioners to actively evaluate sleep and facilitate sleep hygiene interventions with stroke survivors to optimize outcomes. This national survey examined sleep management knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors of OTs and OTAs working in stroke rehabilitation. Although 98% of respondents felt sleep assessment and intervention were important, they are not being regularly implemented.

Clinicians lack a reliable method for assessing scapular motion for occupational engagement. This observational, descriptive study demonstrated clinically significant intrarater reliability of a goniometric technique to assess scapular protraction and retraction. This simple, reliable method furthers clinical practice and supports effective documentation and reimbursement for services demonstrating the value of OT.

The purpose of this study was to develop a scale that can measure the cognitive and physical functions of older adults in China, Japan, and Korea and to compare the health function across the three Asian countries. Scale anchoring with Rasch modeling was performed using three aging panel survey databases to obtain 13 cognitive function items and 20 physical function items. The study findings showed that Japan had the highest physical and cognitive functions of the three countries.

A single-subject case study investigated the effectiveness of an interdisciplinary 8-week walk and run training program for functional neurological disorder (FND) using the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM). At postintervention, increases in performance and satisfaction exceeded clinically meaningful change. At 60 days postintervention, a clinically meaningful decrease in satisfaction prompted additional self-management training and provided lessons for future OT practice.

Upper extremity differences can produce challenges in childhood occupations. 3D printing is emerging in rehabilitation science for the creation of assistive technology because of its customizability and cost-effectiveness. A preprinting protocol was created for assessing, selecting, and designing a 3D-printed prosthesis for a young child with an upper extremity difference. This project demonstrates the feasibility of the protocol and sets the groundwork for future research with 3D-printed prostheses.

This research aimed to answer the question of how much education about trauma-informed care (TIC) have OTs received or are seeking out, and how are OTs implementing elements of TIC in their daily practice. Narrative record analysis from Level II southwest university fieldwork rotations revealed two OT student fieldwork failure themes. Students failing the Level II fieldwork experience struggled with clinical reasoning and soft skills. Results directed program decisions, revealing the need to examine the qualitative experiences of students who fail Level II fieldwork. Moreover, research that analyzes data using the updated 2021 Fieldwork Performance Evaluation is vital to supporting future fieldwork success.

This study provides evidence for the validity of the Weekly Calendar Planning Activity-10 (WCPA-10) for adults with stroke. The WCPA-10 is a valuable tool for assessing executive function (EF) among stroke patients because it can provide in-depth information on the process and quality of performance. This study also demonstrates the need to use performance-based tests even with patients who perform normally on cognitive screening tests to detect subtle EF difficulties that may affect daily functioning.

This study explores the impact of using keyforms on MSOT learners’ ability to analyze task items according to level of difficulty, select the just-right challenge interventions, and choose appropriate short-term and long-term goals. Outcomes revealed that keyform use significantly improved identification of level of difficulty and just-right challenges but not goal setting. Keyform use may help answer the call to action to personalize measurement and demonstrate the distinct value of OT services.

The Multi-Directional Reach Test’s (MDRT’s) limits of stability when reaching to the right (i.e., cm) statistically correlated with shirt dressing time (doff time rs = -.320, p = .023; total dressing time rs = -.340, p = .016). Center of pressure excursion during the MDRT and shirt dressing were very strongly correlated anteroposteriorly and mediolaterally (rs = .923-.991, p < .001). Time-based dressing tasks may be a robust indicator of balance for OT use but require further investigation.

This study examined whether a person-centered evaluation template generating occupational profiles of middle-school-age refugee youth was useful for guiding services at a community-based nonprofit. Analysis of data across participants revealed common challenges these youth face in their migration journeys and revealed key areas that, if addressed, could support positive occupational identity formation. Results may assist OTs who may encounter forcibly displaced youth in their practice.

The present scoping review aims to determine how the OT literature conceptualizes and defines sensory modulation behaviors in the evaluation and treatment of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The review identified overall inconsistencies in the systematic use of sensory models to direct assessment and terminology in OT practice. The Child Assessment of Function Eating (CAFE) was designed to provide a comprehensive feeding assessment, with all major components (self-feeding, self-drinking, mealtime behavior, oral-motor skills, sensory food preferences, nutritional intake) in one assessment. This poster will present the normative data obtained from 63 children ages 3-7 years who were evaluated with the CAFE. Data collection included a 3-day food diary, the CAFE form, and a food preference checklist.

The Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education^® (ACOTE^®) requires OT and OT assistant educational programs to include intraprofessional collaboration activities in their curriculum. We conducted a survey of all the OT and OTA programs in the United States. Results indicate that 21% of OT and OT assistant programs do not include an opportunity for intraprofessional collaboration. This survey also examines the types and length of intraprofessional activities that are offered by OT programs in the United States.

Nerve entrapment syndromes are among the most common types of clinical neuropathy. Frequent misdiagnosis of these conditions has been identified in the literature. This study explored emerging methods used in the assessment of upper extremity nerve entrapments. A systematic protocol was developed on the basis of these advanced techniques. The protocol was implemented by upper extremity specialists, and a descriptive survey was conducted to gain insight into the benefits of the protocol.

Research demonstrates that cognitive decline can be evidenced in driving before any deficit scores in cognitive testing. Observation of performance is essential for any OT performance assessment, especially for complex instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs) such as driving. OTs frequently experience low back pain secondary to patient handling tasks. Different bed heights have been shown to elicit different low back and hand forces, but the full range of bed heights has never been explored. This study observed low back and hand forces using a full range of bed heights and found that higher bed heights reduce the forces necessary when performing a patient boosting task, thereby reducing the overall stress on the bodies of OTs.

This multimethod study identified four themes within the therapist-patient relationship that affect the provision of holistic and collaborative care. Therapists developed a complex relationship with their patients, leading to high scores on measures of adherence and engagement. A qualitative descriptive study using focus groups of 13 expert OTs across settings is the first to describe the OT intervention process of rehabilitation for adults with persistent symptoms from concussion. Pediatric feeding difficulties can negatively affect a child’s ability to gain adequate nutrition and participate in mealtime occupations. This study used qualitative interviews to understand the effects of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic and infection control procedures on the occupational engagement of nursing facility residents with mild to moderate cognitive deficits. This qualitative study sought to explore the impact that driving, community mobility resources, and fall risk had in the lives of adults age 65 and older. The impact of a standardized patient encounter experience on student performance skills and perceptions of fieldwork readiness was examined. The purpose of this study is to assess the relationship between holistic admissions criteria and occupational therapy program ranking. A retrospective cross-sectional cohort descriptive study design was used. Programs using holistic admissions criteria weren’t statistically different from programs that didn’t use holistic admissions criteria on their overall ranking programs (χ² = 0.55, p = 0.46), which indicates that use of holistic admission criteria doesn’t negatively impact program ranking.

International fieldwork experiences allow OT students to develop valuable skills. This study examines the differences in OT student perceptions regarding personal and professional growth after a Level I fieldwork experience in Jamaica. Students were surveyed, and a statistical analysis was conducted. The findings suggest that international fieldwork is related to perceived personal and professional development, regardless of the amount of prior didactic coursework completed.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak caused disruptions in people’s daily occupations. This study results showed that pattern of daily occupation has changed differently for everyone during the lockdown period. A positive correlation was found between positive affect and recreational activities during lockdown. This study expanded the understanding of occupational disruption as a complex phenomenon, suggesting that recreational activities at home might promote resilience and coping with future epidemics.

In this mixed-methods study, we investigated faculty perceptions of OT practitioners’ educational preparation for designation as Qualified Mental Health Professionals (QMHPs). The American Occupational Therapy Association’s (AOTA’s) Vision 2025 promotes OT practitioners working collaboratively within systems (AOTA, 2017). This study researched the impact of tactile play on the oral acceptance of a nonpreferred wet food item among siblings. The results show preliminary evidence that using the SOS approach via teletherapy may increase the acceptance of aversive foods among children. The results inform OT practitioners about the use of the SOS approach alongside caregiver education. OT practitioners working with children with food aversions should consider play with wet food items before facilitating eating of the same foods.

This study investigated the impact of sensory processing patterns on student success and the college transition. Sixty-two freshman students were recruited; three participated in follow-up interviews. No differences in grade point average and sensory preferences were found; however, 90.3% of participants scored outside the range similar to most people on the Adolescent/Adult Sensory Profile. Further research is needed on the phenomena of student success to explore the various environments and transitions of college freshmen.

This study provides an overview of the cancer symptoms measured by the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measure (PROMIS) Parent Proxy-25 and how they affect social health. By addressing factors of depression, fatigue, mobility, and social participation, therapists can provide more effective therapy and ensure quality service delivery to promote occupational participation throughout the cancer care continuum.

The goal of this systematic review is to examine interventions and strategies for improving reaction time and fine motor skills in individuals with Down syndrome (DS). Common interventions included bilateral limb training, table tennis training, assisted cycling therapy, and serial reaction time tasks. Overall, motor task trainings are effective methods for boosting reaction time in the population with DS.

Understanding the process of stroke caregiver decision making can best support the caregiver role to reduce burden. Results from a secondary analysis of interviews with stroke caregivers about decisions made were obtained through a grounded theory approach to uncover underlying mechanisms associated with the decision-making process. Seven categories were identified that can influence how information and training are passed on to caregivers to optimize outcomes.

An estimated 85% of patients with hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (hEDS) experience shoulder pain and impaired function. Kinesiology taping (KT) may be used by OT practitioners as an intervention to decrease shoulder pain and improve upper extremity function in individuals with hEDS. The purpose of this study was to investigate the short-term effects (0–48 hr) of KT on pain and function in individuals with hEDS and shoulder pain.

This study investigated the long-term effects of movement-based and task-based mirror therapy in people with poststroke hemiparesis. This follow-up study added a third time point to a previous randomized controlled trial and found significant long-term improvements in occupational performance, indicating maintained benefits of mirror therapy and some significant benefits in the task-based group, or benefits of purposeful action. However, study limitations inhibit drawing meaningful applications to the field of OT.

Therapists explored the perceptions of caregivers of children with developmental disabilities who did, and did not. do telehealth and whether they found it feasible, effective, and supportive. Results show that telehealth can be effective if there is internet access, as well as effective communication between the caregiver and therapist. Our study indicates that therapists should be flexible during telehealth to accommodate for language barriers and children who have difficulty attending to telehealth.

Two hundred forty-eight patients in a large urban skilled nursing facility (SNF) were studied, examining intensity of rehabilitation services among individuals with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Of the population, 58.1% participated in OT and physical therapy services and 13.3% participated in speech therapy services. Significantly higher intensities of rehabilitation services were noted in the 71 patients who were postacute care. More research is needed to determine the most efficacious intensities for geriatric patients with COVID-19, which may vary on the basis of rehabilitation type and patient characteristics.

We examined the relationships between participation in different extracurricular activities and the overall physical and mental health of OT students across a 2-year period. Participation in certain occupations was associated with positive mental health, and other occupations were linked to poorer physical health. Exploration and promotion of participation in extracurricular occupations may be considered to support OT students’ health.

Exposure to early trauma significantly influences development, affecting functional participation in daily occupations. Trauma-informed practices within schools are of high interest and significance to school-based practitioners. Results indicate that OTs need to become advocates for the profession, to ensure growth in the understanding of our vast scope of practice within schools, and to continue growing the role of school-based practitioners in supporting children who have experienced trauma.

Prevalence of burnout and compassion fatigue has risen in health care workers as a result of coronavirus disease 2019 and increased awareness of ongoing injustices. Yet, little is known about these constructs in relation to OT practitioners. This mixed-methods study explored OT practitioners’ perceptions of education and training regarding burnout and compassion fatigue. Results can serve to guide thinking about effective academic and professional programming to prevent or mitigate burnout and compassion fatigue.

Many OT education programs globally depend on visiting instructors. The teaching approaches of the visiting instructors may differ from the context in which they will teach. This study explores the influence of visiting instructors on learning in a South Asian OT program. Researchers found that language, active learning, the link between content and local context, and contrasting views of knowledge influenced local students’ learning.

Illness identity is the perception people develop about themselves in relation to their health condition and how it integrates into their identity and daily life. Some individuals with autism negatively perceive their diagnosis and try to distance themselves from the autism label. That may affect their psychological and social quality of life. This qualitative study explored the construct of trauma-informed care (TIC) in pediatric OT. Grounded theory methodology revealed a central theme of OTs addressing TIC through direct and indirect interventions. Subthemes included support systems, targeting areas of difficulty, and characterization influencing intervention. The study concluded that therapists consider trauma and formulate interventions on the basis of the child’s needs from a holistic approach.

Intimate relationships are significantly associated with quality of life for young people with Down syndrome (DS). These relationships are a facet of social participation within the scope of OT practice that is not often addressed in practice. This descriptive study explores self-determination and perceptions of intimate relationships from the perspective of young adults with DS (ages 18-30 years) and their caregivers. Implications of findings for OT practice are discussed.

Older adults’ general decision-making processes and strategies often differ from those of younger adults. This two-phase study used a qualitative grounded theory approach to better understand community-dwelling older adults’ decision making regarding assistive technology (Phase 1) and then narrowed its focus to explore differences and similarities between young-old and old-old adults (Phase 2). Older adults in this study made choices to make life better. Old-old participants sought less information and fewer options.

This scoping review summarizes the current literature regarding novice OT practitioners’ use of occupation. Findings address how occupation is used and described by novice therapists. Occupation as a source of professional tension and the cognitive load of occupation-centered practice influenced novices’ experience using occupation. Complex instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs) are significantly affected with moderate to severe cognitive impairment. Many health care professionals have assumed that with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or in the prediagnosis stages of disease. IADLs such as medication management are not significantly affected. This scoping review showed a strong correlation between MCI and medication errors, indicating the importance of assessing MCI and medication management before the recognition of cognitive deficits or diagnosis.

The purpose of this study is to assess the practical value of video cases as an educational tool for OT students enrolled in a required clinical lab course before Level II fieldwork. Students prefer that future educational resources engage them in hands-on learning with ample time for practical application. When video case studies are used, students prefer them to be accompanied by faculty elaboration, time for student questions, and opportunities for simulation or role-play.

Using a mixed-methods methodology, this study examines why OTs choose the path of leadership. Data were collected through semistructured interviews and a leadership questionnaire with seven OT leaders in the United States. The collected data were transcribed and coded for themes by multiple coders. Results of a leadership questionnaire identify commonalities for leadership behaviors among the participants, providing implications for practitioners.

Perfectionism among students who are future health care providers could negatively affect academic performance, health outcomes, future career burnout, and poor work performance. This study determined rates of perfectionism among graduate OT, speech-language pathology, and physical therapy students and explored the impact of perfectionism on academic and psychosocial outcomes. Over the course of 5 years, a total of 31 people with aphasia (PWA) participated in an Intensive Comprehensive Aphasia Program (ICAP), which included 4 hours of OT a week. Using the Activity Card Sort, this research study examined what goals PWA chose to address. Of 151 goals, PWA most frequently chose high demand leisure (27%) and instrumental (27%) activities. This provides support for OT in ICAPs to address these occupations affected by stroke.

Discrimination and other forms of racism in the workplace contribute to mental and physical chronic stressors. This qualitative study explores diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) among workers in a statewide prison system. Focus group findings indicate that workers are concerned about how they are treated by peers and management; suggestions for workplace health improvements are considered.

This study examined parent satisfaction and perceptions of telehealth for a parent coaching intervention for families of children with special health care needs. Parents (N = 15) completed the Telehealth Usability Questionnaire and a semistructured interview. Researchers analyzed data using descriptive and correlational statistics and thematic analyses. Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) threatened leisure, rendering individuals vulnerable to physical and mental decline. Results varied in leisure stress coping during COVID-19 but hold promise for resilience and leisure participation. Our study evaluated how changes in school environment resulting from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) affected the occupations of sleep, play, and leisure in school-age children. We surveyed parents about their children’s occupations at the onset of the 2020-2021 school year. Survey results showed that instruction type affected play and some leisure activities of children. The data indicate effects on occupational engagement related to changes in school environment, with potential long-term impacts on child development.

This study explored undergraduate students’ transition into college from a holistic, occupation-based perspective. This study explored the familiarity and use of sensory-based theories by OT practitioners across the United States. A cross-sectional survey design was used and resulted in 201 practitioner responses. Significant associations were found with familiarity of different theorists, theories, and assessments across geographical regions and degree level. This study contributes to the limited understanding of the use and familiarity with sensory-based theories.

This study determined the need for community reintegration resources for clients with acquired brain injury (ABI) after insurance discharge. Results showed that (1) community integration is an ongoing struggle, (2) lack of educational materials and access to care is a barrier, and (3) increased support and follow-up are needed. Resources should be distributed at time of discharge to increase education, preparedness, access to care, and quality of life.

Health care professionals’ antifat bias results in substandard quality of care that contributes to health disparities. OT and physical therapy assistants are key stakeholders in rehabilitation; however, little research examines these clinicians’ antifat bias. This study examined OT assistant and physical therapy assistants’ explicit and implicit antifat bias and find that the majority hold antifat bias with demographics and beliefs correlating with the findings.

Understanding the full spectrum of deficits and early predictors associated with Zika virus (ZIKV) is important for OTs to provide early intervention therapy to maximize long-term child functional outcomes. Using a rhesus macaque model, we examined the impact of ZIKV on gait development. Compared with controls, macaques with prenatal exposure to ZIKV demonstrated less balance over the first month of life, potentially identifying an early predictor of late-onset functional motor deficits.

This presentation describes a unique methodological contribution of combining interviews and surveys. Feeding histories gained through interviews enhance the quantitative data of two previously published studies by examining factors related to feeding children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), including parenting stress, coparenting, and feeding behaviors. Our findings make a methodical contribution to identifying and prioritizing contextual factors that do not show up in quantitative analysis.

This study investigated OT student confidence in addressing sexuality and intimacy. Outcomes reveal that (1) most students are not confident problem solving clients’ sexual concerns and (2) students want more opportunities to practice communication, implement interventions, and normalize the topic. This study explored the employers’ perception of entry-level OTs’ competence in the treatment of upper extremity dysfunction (UED). A qualitative study using a basic interpretive approach was conducted using semi-structured interviews with seven OT supervisors. Participants identified skills needed for treating UED, skills expected from entry-level OTs, and their perception of entry-level competence, grouped in three themes: overarching skills, evaluation skills, and interventions skills.

The benefits of universal design for learning (UDL) in classrooms have been shown to support lower education and undergraduate students, but its use has not been integrated into higher education, such as medical and allied health graduate programs. This study determined which statistical methods are most commonly used in the occupational therapy (OT) literature by reviewing and categorizing all articles in 13 core OT journals from January 2018 - December 2018 (1,223 articles). The results of this study can help to better inform OT curricula as to which methods should be emphasized in teaching to prepare practitioners as evidence-based clinicians. These findings can also help inform clinicians seeking continuing education on statistics.

Focal task-specific dystonia is a fine motor disorder that affects professional musicians, for whom this diagnosis is often career ending. This study explored musicians’ perceptions of the lived experience of focal task-specific dystonia. The findings of this study suggest client-centered and collaborative approaches to care, highlighting the importance of addressing emotional factors related to chronic conditions and occupational transition and the need for improved approaches to evaluation.

This qualitative study describes the lived experiences of 24 men with breast cancer through interpretive phenomenological analysis. Men face unique challenges and lifestyle changes related to the diagnosis. Key themes affecting occupational performance were identified: living as a man with a ‘woman’s disease,’ promoting awareness through advocacy, altered self-image and perceptions by others, support systems, constant comparison to women, and barriers to health care.

Now what? In my work with caregivers, this is a question that comes up again and again from dementia caregivers after the person they have cared for passes away. I joined them in wondering what life looks like as one transitions out of a role that dominated much of one’s everyday life. A descriptive correlation study examined relationships among temperament effortful control, executive function, and sensory processing behavior. This exploratory study examined OT students’ knowledge and perceptions of functional electrical stimulation (FES) cycle technology. This study demonstrates a lack of OT student knowledge of and exposure to FES cycle technology despite its proven effectiveness in the United States, possibly limiting client access to the technology. The aim is to examine whether electronic communication devices (ECDs), assistive technology (AT), and Internet use increases the odds of high social integration (HSI) after tetraplegia injury. A binary logistic regression determined the use of ECD, AT, and Internet increased the odds of HSI by 300% after tetraplegia injury. Prioritizing ECD independence in this population by evaluating and addressing AT needs could significantly improve access to socialization opportunities and participation.

This cross-sectional survey study used the RAND 36-Item Short Form Survey and Volunteer Function Inventory to explore relationships between motivations for volunteering and perceived well-being. Coronavirus disease 2019 forced educators to provide virtual content while maintaining standards such as interprofessional education (IPE). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of a virtual IPE activity on students’ attitudes and perceptions of IPE and to compare virtual with in-person IPE learning. Quantitative analysis found that virtual IPE can improve students’ attitudes and perceptions toward IPE and that it may be have as much impact as in-person activities. Children with disabilities have limited access to leisure and recreation activities. This study explored parental perspectives of inclusion and the impact of an adaptive dance program on their children. Interviews and a focus group were conducted. Results indicated that parents define inclusion as acceptance and expressed gratitude for the benefits and funding of the program. Findings highlight the need for more inclusive recreation and evidence to procure funding for sustainable programming.

Bias in health care contributes to health disparities of people with disabilities (PWD). OT and physical therapy assistants are key stakeholders in rehabilitation; however, little research examines these clinicians’ bias toward PWD. This study examined OT and physical therapy assistants’ explicit and implicit disability bias, and the results show that the majority are implicitly biased toward PWD despite the majority being explicitly not biased. Online Photovoice methods were used to examine the lived experience of OT students during the COVID-19 pandemic. Adaptations enabled participation as a means of safely exploring the students’ lived experiences. This poster presents a case study of 56 year-old woman with weak wrist extension 2.5 years after subcortical ischemic stroke who participated in an extensor carpi radialis (ECR) motor evoked potential (MEP) operant conditioning training study. The participant increased maximum voluntary contraction in the ECR and improved Box and Block Test and Fugl-Meyer upper extremity (UE) scores. Individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) have poorer health outcomes than those without IDD, in part because of a lack of training for health care professionals. Researchers implemented a training program for emergency department staff aimed at improving recognition, documentation, and coding. Results indicate that training was considered useful by staff but did not result in coding changes. Recommendations for future research and continued efforts are made.

Postpandemic, OT practitioners must make clinical judgments about the continuation of telehealth for specific clients. However, there is a lack of research on the factors that influence both practitioners’ and clients’ decision-making processes in using telehealth and promote success. The purpose of this research was to uncover ways in which OT practitioners drew from clinical reasoning, expertise, and resilience to guide service delivery modality decision making.
