OTs need to ensure that elderly adults continue to lead a healthy daily life in their community. For this, it is necessary to understand and approach each group according to the health status of elderly adult. Frail elderly adults are a group of elderly people in the predisability stage, which is closely related to the dysfunction and death. Lifestyle, known as a determinant of frailty, has great potential to improve human health as a changeable factor in health status.

PURPOSE: Frailty is a group of elderly people in the pre-disability stage and is closely related to dysfunction in the elderly. Lifestyle is a changeable factor in the health status and is known as a determinant of frailty. For the healthy daily life the elderly, occupational therapists need to identify the frail elderly group and promote their healthy lifestyle. However, there were limited studies explaining trends or structures in this research field. Therefore, this study conducts to investigate quantitatively and comprehensively characterise the landscapes of publications on the lifestyle of the frail elderly.
DESIGN: This study uses a quantitative descriptive method with a bibliometric approach.
METHOD: Data were obtained from the Web of Science between 2011 to 2020. VOSviewer software packages (version 1.6.17) were used to generate visualizing maps based on network data and analyse the publication outputs, countries/regions, institutions, journals, research hot spots.
RESULTS: A total of 543 publications were retrieved between 2011 and 2020, and the number of publications tended to increase. The United States took the lead in this field of research, and the University of Pittsburgh was the most productive institution. According to co-cited reference cluster analysis and keyword co-occurrence analysis, the study hot spots included physical approach, healthy aging, risk factors and consequences of frailty, and cognitive function.
CONCLUSION: The lifestyle research trends and characteristics of the frail elderly over the past 10 years were objectively analyzed. We hope that these findings will encourage further research in the field of geriatric occupational therapy and help plan appropriate directions for intervention in occupational therapy to lead the healthy daily life of the elderly.
