The Journal of Wellbeing Economics (JWELL) is an international peer-reviewed journal dedicated to advancing economic research on human wellbeing. The journal provides a platform for theoretical, empirical, and policy-oriented scholarship that places wellbeing, particularly subjective wellbeing, at the center of economic analysis and public policy. Its aim is to contribute to a renewed welfare economics that evaluates economic systems not only by the scale of production but by their impact on the lived experiences and wellbeing of individuals.
For decades, economic progress has primarily been evaluated through indicators such as income, output, and consumption. Yet these measures provide only a partial view of human welfare, as they fail to capture how individuals experience and evaluate their lives. In response, research on subjective wellbeing (including life satisfaction, affect, and meaning) has expanded rapidly across the economics and the social sciences.
JWELL offers a rigorous, economics-led forum to the growing academic literature advancing wellbeing-informed economic thinking. It seeks to foster dialogue between economics and other disciplines, including psychology, sociology, political science, public health, geography, and environmental studies.
