Published evidence suggest that laboratories allow little delegation of control to the students. We gave first-year undergraduates almost complete control of a laboratory with intensive tutor support. Staff believed the activity to have been welcomed by the students. Evaluation provides far from convincing evidence for this. Explanations are suggested.
