The Instructional Management Systems (IMS) project is developing a set of specifications for learning technologies, with the intention of removing obstacles to their large-scale uptake. In the UK, the Joint Universities' Funding Councils' Information Systems Committee has joined the project as an investment member and has established a UK IMS Centre. IMS is collaborating with other projects active in this area. The IMS specification has several components, each of which is described.

The Dublin Core is a metadata element set intended to facilitate discovery of electronic resources. Originally conceived by the Online Computer Library Center Office of Research and The National Center for Supercomputing Applications for author-generated description of Web resources, it has attracted the attention of formal resource description communities such as museums, libraries, government agencies and commercial organisations.
