Irritable bowel syndrome is a disorder of gut-brain interaction that leads to a signifi cant healthcare burden worldwide. A good physician-patient relationship is fundamental in managing patients who suffer from this poorly understood chronic disease. We highlight possible reasons for breakdown in communication between physicians and irritable bowel syndrome sufferers and suggest possible ways to overcome such pitfalls.
