Abstract
A new attempt has been made to get the clue for solving the strength and fracture problems as complexity system science and engineering in new word. At first, attention is made to that the concept and the research methodology may be different between nearly perfect solids and materials with various nano and macro defects. Next, some of the characteristics of the so‐called “complexity system science” is explained. Then it is shown that the strength and fracture of the solids of the latter type belong to the category of “complexity system science and engineering”. Furthermore, it is proposed that unification is needed of complexity system concept with scientific revolution concept or creative scientific work, for instance, suggested by Thomas S. Kuhn.
It is shown that the strength and fracture of solids are not determined by the stress at an infinitesimal tiny spot, but some finite critical volume (zone). Many examples are shown for strength and fracture of various types. It is shown that the studies on strength and fracture as complexity system science and engineering are most necessary and promising for characterization and identification of such finite critical volume for various cases.
