Summary
Bovine and Vero (simian) cells infected with human cytomegalovirus (CMV) exhibited cytopathic changes and produced specific antigens as demonstrated by immunofluorescence and complement fixation (CF). Infectious virus was recovered by cocultivation with human fibroblasts from the bovine cells only during the first week after inoculation, but from the Vero cells throughout the 4-week period of observation. Herpes-like virus particles were evident by electron microscopy in the nuclei of infected Vero cells at 1, 2, and 4 weeks after inoculation but were not demonstrable in the bovine cells.
