Abstract
Summary
Evidence presented confirmed the propagation of polioviruses 1 (Brunhilde strain), 2 (Lansing strain), and 3 (Leon strain) in primary kidney cell cultures derived from normothermic ground squirrels (Citellus tridecemlineatus). Virus identity was validated by neutralization with homotypic antiserum. A mixed agglutination procedure revealed that the kidney cell cultures were of ground squirrel origin. The basis underlying this phenomenon and its implications were also discussed.
