Abstract
Summary
A study of the effects of heat, pH, and UV light on Yaba tumor virus indicated that heating at 56° for 1 hr, pH 3 at room temperature for 1 hr, and irradiation for less than 30 sec completely inactivated the virus. Inoculation of a mixture of UV-inactivated Yaba virus and active vaccinia virus into monkeys resulted in the formation of a tumorigenic presumptive hybrid virus which retained, for at least three passages, certain antigenic components of both Yaba and vaccinia viruses. A possible mechanism of the hybridization is discussed.
