Abstract
Summary
Melanin catalyzes the nonenzymatic oxidation of NADH and PPD. One atom of oxygen is consumed for 1 mole of NADH oxidized and H2O2 is formed. The NADH reduces the concentration of free radicals in melanin indicating the formation of reduced melanin during the reaction. Melanin's oxidative activity is inhibited by pharmacologic compounds that combine with melanin such as phenothiazines and chloroquine.
