Abstract
Summary
Liver catalase activity in Friend virus-infected germfree mice is significantly depressed below normal values at a stage when splenomegaly is marked and liver involvement slight. The indications are that splenomegaly alone is related to lowered liver catalase rather than mild liver damage or the presence of virus as such. The existence of a spleen-elaborated catalase inhibitory factor is postulated. The value of germfree mice in this study lay in the avoidance of the possibility of bacterial products affecting the liver catalase activity.
