Abstract
Summary and conclusions
By absorption experiments, a strain of NDV was shown to have at least 2 agglutinins with different specificities. Human RBC were shown to possess receptors for only one type, in contrast to chicken RBC which had receptors for both types. This conclusion was further supported by the results of experiments using NDV eluted from human RBC as well as by the absorption of NDV with chicken RBC with selectively blocked receptors. Further experiments using mixed agglutination showed that hemagglutination by the myxoviruses is brought about by the bridging of cells having similar receptors by multivalent viral particles.
