Summary
1. The mechanism of endotoxic abortion does not seem to be triggered by fetal death because endotoxin injected directly into the fetus is innocuous and no radioactivity crosses the placental barrier when labeled endotoxin is administered to the pregnant mouse. 2. Whereas cortisone is not effective, chlorpromazine protects pregnant mice against endotoxin-induced stillbirth. These results suggest that endotoxin may interrupt pregnancy by releasing serotonin or some related substance.
