Abstract
Summary
A study was made of the sera of surgical patients in which preoperative serum was negative for CRP and postoperative serum was strongly CRP-positive. In all cases there was a marked elevation in the alpha globulin fraction of the positive postoperative serum. When the CRP was removed from the postoperative serum, there was a significant reduction in alpha globulin, chiefly in the alpha 1 globulin fraction. When this CRP-positive serum was fractionated with ammonium sulfate, the fraction containing CRP contained no gamma globulin. It was concluded that CRP which appears following surgery is an alpha globulin.
