Stories that strongly attract or repel us can reveal a hidden and more authentic aspect of a man's masculinity that has become darkened by his adaptations to the culture's masculine gender-role paradigms. Stories can raise our consciousness about pathologies of masculinity that we unwittingly live out, and even serve, in a limited capacity, as mentors.
