Abstract
A new approach to the construction of a universal criterion scale for a family of comparable institutions is presented. Proceeding through the development of a sequence of paired calibrations determined by a hierarchical clustering algorithm, the method does not rely on covariate information such as scores on common examinations. As such it is perfectly suited to be employed in aggregated validity studies that combine data from many institutions. Such applications are explored in our companion paper, “Validity Studies Based on a Universal Criterion Scale” (in this issue). The procedure is illustrated with data from American Law Schools.
