Two studies tested the hypothesis that sport spectators' perceptions of cause are a function of their focus of attention. In Study 1, attentional focus was examined from a subject's perspective, i.e., subjects' own attentional preferences were used to predict perceptions of causation. Study 2 examined attentional focus as a true independent variable by assigning subjects to a specific condition manipulating focus of attention. Both studies provided strong support for the hypothesis.
