This study examined to what extent relations between distal contexts, individual characteristics and young adults' attainment of social status were mediated by perceptions of proximal family conditions. Data were collected from 300 Australian 21-yr -olds as part of a longitudinal investigation. The findings indicated that the mediating effect of proximal conditions varied for differing outcomes and differed between females and males.
