The present purpose was to illustrate the range of severity scores among trauma patients. A computerised conversion of ICD-9CM injury diagnoses into scores for severity of injury was processed on data of 36,178 trauma patients. More than 94% of the patients had injuries of minor severity. The probability of mortality was .67 when the Injury Severity Score (ISS) was ≥ 16.
