Abstract
The purpose of the present investigation was to examine whether a cognitive style of developing imagery of success and action outside the sport context relates to point production by elite ice hockey athletes. The subjects were 31 NHL players tested on achievement and action-imagery tasks. Multiple regression showed that the imagery variables significantly predicted goals and assists across five outcomes which spanned three seasons. These results are discussed with respect to a cognitive style construct relevant to current theories about the relationships between imagery and athletic performance.
