In response to a single question requiring simple arithmetic and consideration of a constraint 60% of 435 freshmen performed the correct calculation and 36% obtained the correct solution. More of the college students responded adequately than the 13-yr.-olds of a larger prior sample, but in both groups large percentages failed to appreciate the constraint and so did not give a correct solution.
