A method of identifying item subsets that optimize coefficient alpha is described. To make the discussion concrete, analysis of data from an administration of the Finding Embedded Figures Test to 791 middle-school students is presented. The complementary use of iterative item deletion and bootstrap evaluation of generalizability of results should facilitate more reliable measurement and greater likelihood of accurately estimating effect sizes in substantive studies.
