Abstract
Various authors differentiate between an analytic and a synthetic strategy in solving block-design items. In the present study it was investigated whether the choice of one of the two strategies depends on chronological age, intelligence, or block-design total score. The results, based on the scores of 770 subjects equally divided over the 11 WISC—R age categories, indicated that all subjects predominantly use the analytic strategy. The choice of one of the two strategies may well depend on stimulus characteristics rather than on individual processing preferences.
