This study supports previous conclusions that the perceived personal relevance of ambient noise is related to its stressful effects. Some subjects were told that a noise was unrelated to a cognitive task, while others were told that its effects on the cognitive performance were being studied. As predicted, relevant noise was rated as less disturbing.
