Abstract
The study investigated whether young writers can accurately estimate the length of space required for words written in cursive script. 53 third-grade students were asked to draw boxes estimating the amount of space they would need to write 16 words of 3 to 6 letters. Significant correlations were found between the lengths of the boxes and the lengths of the words. No significant differences were found between boys and girls in ability to predict length. The word's referent and the context of the word affected significantly, but not consistently, the length of the box drawn.
