The Reading Miscue Inventory was used to analyze the miscues of 20 college freshmen generated while reading passages from four modes of writing: narrative, descriptive, expository, and persuasive. Ranked scores showed no significant difference in the total number of miscues among the passages. Findings suggest that the reading process remains stable across the four modes. Teaching readers to “shift” strategies according to mode of writing appears questionable.
