The present paper focusses on the comparison of the development of free recall and recognition. A videotape depicting a quarrel between a teacher and pupil was shown to 201 boys aged 11 to 18 yr. Memory was tested immediately after presentation of the film and again two weeks later. Free recall showed an improvement with age but recognition decreased with age. Item difficulty had a significant effect on recognition.
