Abstract
Forgetting of spatial information was studied three times (1968, 1972, and 1980) in three feral-born rhesus monkeys (Macaca Mulatta) acquired in 1952 at the approximate age of 2 yr. and in three rhesus monkeys born in the laboratory between 1956 and 1958. Memory was evaluated by illuminating one cell at a time in a 4 × 4 matrix, varying the interval between the time the monkey saw the stimulus and being allowed to respond to it. Considerable practice was given on this task between the 1968 and 1972 studies. No further practice occurred between 1973 and 1980. Forgetting occurred over brief intervals of time (0 to 18 sec.) for all subjects and persisted in spite of considerable changes in the level of performance.
