Children 4 to 9 yr. (N = 356) were assessed on movement pattern characteristics while moving across a horizontal overhead ladder Movement was identified and categorized within five pattern classifications. Few 4-yr.-olds were physically capable of moving across the ladder without falling; the rhythmic time-step pattern was the most frequent mode of movement among children 6 to 9 yr.
