The Graphic Differential and Japanese and English versions of the Semantic Differential were administered to 22 Japanese-English bilinguals to assess their comparability. As predicted, the ratings of translation-equivalent concepts were more similar when rated on the Graphic Differential than on Semantic Differential in the two languages. However, the relation of the two scales is approximately the same for the Evaluation factor only. Their comparability varied for Potency and Activity factors between the languages tested. This variability suggests that the meaning of these nonverbal scales is probably not exactly the same across languages.
