The effects of simulated nonfluencies on the comprehension of a 205-word recorded passage were studied. The results for 5 groups of 30 undergraduates indicate that prolongations and double-unit phoneme repetitions on key words and on lesser words reduced comprehension and that the comprehension reduction with the prolongations on key words was less than the reductions produced by the other conditions of nonfluency.
