Choice Reaction Time and Location of Vehicle Controls

Abstract

The reaction time of 24 nondriver Ss was measured to six controls in each of two cars, one with an “American” style layout, the other with a “European” style layout. Ss uniformly reached for and touched the controls in the European style car faster, a finding which has implications for the design and layout of motor-vehicle controls. Implications of the further finding that reactions to immediately repeated stimuli were uniformly faster are also mentioned.
