Abstract
Data were generated by computer in order that the four possible variations of shape and/or level of profiles for two groups could be compared. The results of discriminant analysis were compared with those of group X trials analysis of variance. Findings indicated that group X trials analysis of variance could distinguish between group profiles by either shape, level, or both. Discriminant analysis could only identify that the groups were significantly different in their profiles. However, discriminant analysis has the advantage of generating the linear functions necessary for assignment of individuals to groups while group X trials analysis of variance has the disadvantage of requiring group profiles to be in standard score units.
