Abstract
From 66 high school students studied, an original (n = 19), and a non-original (n = 25) group was chosen on the basis of two originality measures extracted from the Utility and Gestalt Completion Tests. As predicted, the original group, when compared with the non-original group, was more fluent, less rigid and less stimulus bound. The group also showed itself to be Tolerant of Ambiguity, low on Social Desirability and capable of adaptive regression in the service of the ego. The results were discussed in terms of an Objective-Subjective continuum, the objective side being more stimulus bound, rigid, and lacking in adaptive regression. The original group was more proximal to the subjective end of the continuum and capable of momentary and partially controlled regression which served a constructive and creative function.
