Abstract
An attempt was made to control the duration of oral-genital self-stimulation in 2 male rhesus macaques. Response-contingent electric shock was programmed for 10 daily sessions and followed by 10 additional daily sessions of tone-shock classical conditioning trials. During the classical conditioning phase, the tone was made contingent on self-stimulation in the home cage. Primary punishment (shock) immediately and completely suppressed self-sucking performance. However, duration of sucking within Ss' home cage remained unchanged. Subsequent tone-shock trials continued to suppress behavior to zero levels in the shock box. In addition, the tone was now an effective conditioned punisher within the home cage, reducing self-stimulation to near zero levels.
