A “preoccupation” hypothesis of schizophrenic deficit was proposed and a psychomotor approach to treatment (Simulated Work Therapy) was tested. Results of this first study indicated that the treatment, through intensive interference with preoccupation, increased 12 chronic schizophrenics' responsiveness to hospital routines and reduced their irritability.
