Abstract
The study attempted to test the social judgment approach to the measurement of commitment by developing behavioral measures of commitment on two issues. The behavioral measures were used as criteria against which three social judgment measures were compared. The results provided a measure of support for Sherif and Hovland's social judgment approach. Although one issue yielded no significant relationships, two of the three relationships examined in the second issue, cigarette smoking, were positive and significant (p = .05). The need for further testing of the approach by different means and with various issues was stressed.
