Two-point thresholds were measured on the forearms of 14 Ss. Threshold measures after the application of Vaseline were significantly lower than those taken after the application of an anesthetic placebo. The magnitude of the differences between thresholds for each S was not related to S's verbalized belief in the effectiveness of this placebo nor to the magnitude of GSR reactivity.
