Thysell (1969) reported bimodal simple reaction-time distributions of single motor units to light. Lieblich's suggestion that the lower mode of the distributions (at the interval 150 to 174 msec.) reflects the orienting response of the units was not supported by analysis. However, the hypothesis was not completely discredited, for the orienting response may occur as a function of the sequential relationships between intertrial intervals.
