The personality characteristics of male alcoholic out-patients were investigated as a function of length of stay in therapy. It was found that the longer the stay in therapy, the more deferent and self-abasing the patient tended to be. This finding, replicated by other researchers, should be considered in the planning and application of treatment programmes for alcoholics.
