This study compared the rank-order and paired-comparison methods of measuring terminal and instrumental values. It was hypothesized that the paired-comparison method would yield higher test-retest reliabilities than the rank-order method. 30 undergraduates were given a paired-comparison scale for 18 terminal and 18 instrumental values, and retested 5 wk. later. The results showed that the paired-comparison method yielded a higher reliability only for the terminal values.
