Abstract
This paper suggests the existence of two kinds of role-taking (empathy). The one that may be called intuitional is the one that Beck relates to Dilthey's Verstehen, Husserl's essentia, and the Rorschach examiner's own test responses. It is hypothesized to correlate with Rorschach movement responses and to entail the Erlebnis concept of “experience.” The one that may be called inferential is hypothesized to correlate with Rorschach form responses and to entail the Erfahrung concept of “experience.” Of the two clusters, focus is on intuitional role-taking, movement responses, and Erlebnis. It is suggested that an Erlebnis psychology is inevitably an ad hominem psychology.
