Background conversation impaired the reaction time (RT) performance of 34 schizophrenics with a recent history of auditory hallucinations. 32 anxious schizophrenics gave elevated RTs when the room lights were extinguished. 32 severely ill patients did equally poorly under the three conditions of stimulus presentation.
