Although 31 male students did not recognize their own shadow profiles, these were rated as more friendly and intelligent than profiles of others. For 23 Ss favorableness of self ratings of profiles correlated .36 with thresholds for a tachistoscopically presented picture having a narcissistic theme. Data are intepreted in terms of perceptual defense.
