Computer Simulations as a Framework for Critical Thinking Instruction

Abstract

Nowadays, the need for critical thinking instruction is being increasingly emphasized in order for students to function effectively inside and outside of school. In this regard, the present study was intended to illustrate how a computer simulation can be used to frame a critical-thinking lesson. For this purpose, a simulation was developed, which was designed to give students opportunities to exercise their decision-making skills and to evaluate the outcomes. Twenty-five fifth graders manipulated the simulation for two class periods. Subjects were given a short essay test before and after the simulation, which demanded that they use their critical thinking strategies. The results indicate that their thinking skills improved significantly after the simulation.
