Abstract
Vibrational spectra of phthalimide and N-phenylphthalimide adsorbed on oxidized Al substrates have been studied with the use of inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy. Ring mode bands indicate that the substituted benzene rings interact strongly with the surface, thus adsorbing in a flatwise configuration. There is spectral evidence of Al-N complexing, and results also support the formation of weak Al-O=C bonding via one carboxyl group per molecule on average. No C=O bond cleavage has been observed, and the effect of surface OH groups on phthalimide adsorption remains unclear.
